Hi,
Normally I am working on period furniture in oak, but my friends seems to think that I can help them with any wood problem (which often is the case).
But now i don’t know. My friend Srinivas has a kitchen, the doors are sealed in plastic (see attached photo) The sealing comes off.
Any idea what how to help him in a decent way?
There is only one door with this problem, the others are still OK…
I think this is a manufacturing fault, but we cannot find the manufacturer anymore ( house was bought including kitchen).
In my little shop I have no clue how to get again a decent appearance to the doors.
thanks for your help,

These look like composit doors covered in PVC, melamine or ???. If you could strip all the plastic off the defective door, you might be able to paint it to match, but I doubt you could get all the stuff off. My guess is that the best way to deal with this problem might be 1) make a new matching door and paint it to match, or 2) buy all new matching doors for the cabs.

The covering on the doors is called Thermofoil. There is nothing you can do to restore the Thermofoil. It's a plastic membrane that is essentially vacuum shrink wrapped to the door. I've never seen it peel like that. Many cabinet companies offer Thermofoil doors. You either need to replace the door or strip it and paint it to match the others. Not an easy task. I'd try to find the cabinet manufacturer and get a replacement, look every where for a label. Check the local kitchen suppliers, take the door along. Chances are, they were bought locally and someone may be able to identify the brand. I'm sure the company would like to see the failure. Finding a door from another company may not match in color or texture.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Thanks,
this already helps me a lot. Thermofoil seems to be the right stuff.
But I have to buy a complete assembled door. local shrinking in my shop will not be possible I guess. For a complete door I have to find the right pattern as well.
The indicated site has a lot of patterns, bu I have not found my friends'one yet. Jaap
Let me confirm that many companies make Thermfoil coated cabinetry. It is generally quite durable. You may be able to find the same door in another manufacturer. Here is one and there are others listed when you google "thermofoil".
