I have just made a plate shelf for a friend’s kitchen and was looking for some suggestions on how best to install it. The house was built in the ’20’s and the wall the shelf is to be installed on is solid as can be. I am fairly certain the wall is brick covered with xx” of plaster.
I was thinking about some hangers on screws set into the wall with expansion anchors. The shelf is 3 1/2 wide by 4 1/4 high by 96″ long (Butternut). I don’t think the home owners want it to be permantly afixed to the wall. But I don’t want it to jump off the wall when all that weight is placed on it.
Any help greatly appreciated.

The part about not permanently affixing the shelf is a hard one. If you have masonry behind the plaster, I think I would use some Tapcons. These are special screws for masonry. Very easy to use, you drill a hole with the proper size masonry bit and just drive the screw. There is no need for an expansion shield or other type of anchor. When it comes time to remove the shelf, there will be some screw holes to fill. You can hide the screws in the shelf support with a plug or button.
If you need a hidden hanger, there are several types. The easiest may be a simple key hole style hanger. You just cut a key hole on the back of your piece with a special router bit and hang the piece on some screws, again, Tapcons. There are metal versions of this as well, also hangers know as Z-clips and some interlocking finger style hangers.

Hammer,
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to see if I can find those Tapcons. Sounds like the ideal solution.
All the Best,

Just about every hardware store and big box carry Tapcons in the masonry fastener department. They come in different head configurations, the ordinary flat Philips will work for most woodworking. A carbide drill bit comes in a package with the screws. I always get an extra bit and use a hammer drill, keep the hole clean and add a dab of screw lubricant.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
