I bet you could use it to hang a mirror, to judge by the visible hook.
Has to be a mount/frame for a mirror or perhaps some art under glass. But a mirror is my guess. You can see on the backside the rabbet for the mirror to fit in. I'll bet you find small holes where the steel "points" were used to fasten the mirror in place.
Thanks a lot!
At first I thought the design was pressed similar to pressed back dining chairs, circa 1900. The more I look, the design does not appear to be wood, but some molded composite material applied to a wood substrate. I do not see any grain marks in the molded surface. The cracks o the front do not line up with the cracks or grain layout of the wood on the reverse side. My guess is European 1890-1920. I saw a lot of similar frames in Belgian bric a brac shops.
Thank you! The size of this frame is 45 by 55 centimeters
Good afternoon Another question has arisen. I would like to restore the frame myself. Do I understand correctly that it needs to be completely disassembled?
First one needs to define restoration. Make like new, or make into an attractive piece that still shows its age? What type of finish?
The cracks in the composition front are not in line with the joints in the back. Dissembling it will probably damage the detail on the front beyond reasonable repair. I am sure there are several books, articles on antique frame repair. Start there.
I have an old oval mirror about the same size that I picked up in Nancy France. The gold leaf is worn and no one would consider it pristine, but it looks good on the wall
Good Luck
Hello! Thanks a lot! I want to preserve its age and original appearance. I don’t want to make something modern out of it! I would limit myself to filling the external cracks and cover them with tinting and varnish for protection! I want to hang it on the wall
