PM 719A & 1/4″ mortise problems
I’m stumped- and I was wondering if anyone could help. I for some odd reason (I regret now) that I decided to use 1/4″ mortises on my chair project (white oak). It probably isn’t a big deal, but I just can’t get it out of my mind.
Anyway I’m getting deflection that I just don’t understand. My first bores (1) come out slightly deflected- and always the same direction. Yet the second pass (2) to clear out the mortise comes out perfectly straight. Never had this problem before- but this IS the first time I’ve used anything as small as a 1/4″ chisel set.
^ O ^ O ^ O ^
1 O 1 O 1 O 1 O=wood 1=slightly deflected ^= direction of deflection
1 2 1 2 1 2 1 1= first pass 2=second straight pass.
Thanks for the help!

Keith,
I had a problem with the base of the 1/4" chisel hitting the top of the fence. I felt stupid when i realized what was going on... but haven't had a problem since then. I may have been using the Clico chisels at the time, though.
Not having experience with the 719A, a possibly ignorant suggestion:
Try looking at the sharpening of the chisel. Could one side be duller than the other side? To test this theory, rotate the chisel 180 degrees? If it then deflects in the opposite direction you would know that it needs to be evenly sharpened.
