My wife saw some pocket door “locks” at a friend’s house the other day and now she is anxious to get some to keep the kids and dog out of our den. Apparently they pop out of the face of the door adjcent to the jam when the doors are closed. Some sort of bar protrudes from the face and prevent the door from being slid back into the pocket. The friend has not been able to identify a brand name or a source. Has anyone here heard or seen of such a lock/latch?
Thanks
Chris

Cwalvoord,
Sterling hardware comes to mind. (Inexpensive)
Steinmetz.
Your local hardware store or big box will have them. The only difference will be that you have to cut a small mortise in the jamb for the latch plate.
Personally, I discourage these. They're seldom actually used, not really strong, and leave a permanent hole in the jamb.
Dave45,
Is there another method of locking pocket doors that you would recommend? BTW, I have looked at a couple of places locally and have not been able to find anything resembling the latch my wife described.
Thanks for your help.
Chris
I'm afraid that I can't be of more help, but I don't know of any other way(s) to lock pocket doors.
As I said, I don't think much of the locks I've seen so I avoid them. We have three pocket doors in our house. Two of them are in the bathrooms separating the toilet & shower areas from the sinks and the "rule" here is that if the door is closed, someone is in there. It's worked fine thru two teenage daughters, and countless guests over the years.
If you just gotta have a lock, try looking on the Rockler web site (http://www.rockler.com) for pocket door hardware. Maybe they have what you need.
Look at the IVES #42 sliding door jamb bolt. There are no preps in the door jamb, only a simple mortise near the back side of the inside face of the door. I believe that's what you are after.

I was able to pick mine up at Home Depot for about $12 each. They're made by Stanley. You'll have to search and/or find that rare bird - a HD associate that can differentiate between his a** and a hole in the ground. They were in two different locations each time I needed to find one. Last time, they were in the area where you'd find brass hinges, gate latches, mending plates, etc. Go figure.
Try your local locksmith. (not key-cutter) There are at least two different companies that make these sliding door locks. The only problem is that you will have to cut a notch in the edge of the door and a small mortice in the frame and it will be a royal pain to fill them in if and when you decide to get rid of the lock. To clear up any confusion, the IVES #42 jamb bolt is installed near the back edge of the pocket door--not the leading edge. There will be no jamb mortise or strike plate to install. It's a sweet system.

Here's a picture of the Ives 42 from their site, available in several finishes. I might try it too. Thanks doorboy.
