Hi Gang,
I know this sounds really crazy, but a friend of mine told me he had a friend that wanted to refinish a desk top that (supposedly) had been finished with an oil crushed out of the roots of poison ivy. I don’t know many of the details, only that the desk is probably 100+ years old and the fellow who wants to work on it is hype allergic to poison ivy. Also, my friend said the desk was made out of mahogany. This sounds more than a little like a lark to me, but I thought I would check and see if anyone had ever heard of such a finish.
I do wonder if the wood is not mahogany, but rather some other tropical exotic and the last person to work on it had an allergic reaction to the dust. I believe there have been several recent posts about this happening to folks.
Thanks for any help and good luck with y’all’s projects

Chinese lacquer is made from a relative of the poison sumac, and has the same effects as poison ivy. Is it possible that the finish is simply lacquer, and someone remembered about Chinese lacquer, and made an unwarranted connection, not really knowing anything about finishes and lacquers?
