has anyone tried the new $100 poly hot glue gun? I assume it uses glue similar to Gorilla Glue. Sounds great. Sick of the cheap glue guns with inferior glue.

I got one for Christmas, very impressive system. Costly, but you will be amazed at the strenth of the joint. End grain to end grain will hold so that you cannot physically, by hand, break it.
They make three types of glue. The fast setting does not impress me as being very fast, in fact it seemed slower than the 1 min. setting.
The general purpose type glue works well for about any thing you want to connect.
I will be using it to do some repairs that I would normally use some long screws to attach some wood into a very ackward place, I know it will work fine. The nice part, is that you can use the gun for up to 20 min. without re connecting it to the power head. The bad part it that it takes about 30 minutes to get it hot and ready to use.
What are you planning to use it for?

Curt,
MAinly I'm over at Breaktime but I do a fair amt of finish carpentry such as cabinetry as well. I just use my glue gun for EVERYTHING. I'll use regular carpenters glue but use touches of hot glue just to hold it till the yellow stuff dries. I absolutly hate all those cheesy glue guns so you talked me into it. Is whatyour saying....the fast drying glue isnt worth the cost? Also does it expand beyond belief like Gorilla Glue???Thanks and be well.AndyIt's not who's right, it's who's left ~ http://CLIFFORDRENOVATIONS.COM

No expansion at all. Dries semi hard, easy to clean up with a sharp tool. much like the old hot glue. but a lot easier to slice and clean up.
It takes 24 hours to fully set up. Moisture makes it work faster.
I tested mine by glueing 3" x 2" blocks of birch 3/4 plywood edge to edge, edge to surface, surface to surface. I could not take it in hand and break any of the joints. I gave it to a number of people, no one could break it.
I put it in a vice, used a 3# dead blow hammer and gave it a good "wack". Each broke in the wood, not in the glue line. That convinced me it was a good product.
I found that it flows a lot better than the old hot melt glue, so you can get a nice clean thin glue line. In fact, you can run a bead, then move it about on the the orther surface to spread it out. I found that it was not necessry to put it on both surfaces. The squeeze out is easy to clean up.
I also found out that when you get it on your skin, it is not as hot as the old hot glue, it is a bit messy to clean off since when you wipe at it, you spread it very thin like ordinary glue. When it cooled a bit more, it was easy to pull off..without any skin.
Like I said, it is expensive, the tube looks large, but it seems to get empty rather quickly.
I understand builders are taking a like to it, easy to use on miter joints, putting up things, fixing broken trim, etc.
I am going to try and fix a bad tear in my wheel barrow tire, probably a stupid thing to do, but why not put it to a real test. I am gluing a boot inside, gluing the split together then putting back the tube and blowing it up again just to see what will happen.

Has anyone tried the glue on things other than wood? I'm primarily thinking about metals, steel to steel and steel to wood.
So far from what I'm reading, it looks like I'll be getting one of these.
Jeff
Curt ..I read I think it was in the new Fine Home Building that someone had real success using PL premium glue tubes to fix their ar hoses. A dab of PL and wrapped it in tape with no prblems so if the hot glue doesnt work try that on your tire.
Thanks for the info...gotta get me one of those .........AndyIt's not who's right, it's who's left ~ http://CLIFFORDRENOVATIONS.COM
As I understand it there are a couple of companies with this kind of glue gun, is that correct?
Which one are you guys talking about?bobl Volo Non Voleo Joe's cheat sheet
The one I have is the HiPURformer that uses a Titbond glue in a Steinel gun.
BTW I said I was going to glue my 30 year old wheel barrow tire that had a cut/tear in the side. I glued in a patch of pond liner and then glued the break, held it until it was solid, waited 24 hours, put in back on with the same tube, blew that sucker up to about 20#. It looks good enough for another 20 years.
I am impressed with the glue.
Put on some door jam extensions with it. I was faced with screws, or long nails, it worked great. Now I have some to go on a steel door jam, will see how that works.
