I’m a newbie at finishes (actually woodworking period) anyhow my
question…can you apply gloss polyurethane over a red oak surface spray
painted with black enamel to give a sort of glossy grained oak
appearance??
If not a good idea, what can be brushed on red oak to give a type of solid
black look with the grain showing…tryed to brush on enamel but this
leaves brush marks and the grain was obscured, tried thinning the paint
but could not get that solid black look…spraying it gives me the look I
want but got “spray mist?” look in various area of the piece..when I
brushed on gloss poly over the sprayed piece it turned out just the way I
wanted but am concerned that the poly might peel off one day. Thanks
much for your comments

Yes, you can apply gloss poly over black enamel paint. But you'd get much better-looking results for the effect you're after by spraying on a couple of coats of black lacquer, followed by 2 coats of clear lacquer over that, then rubbing out the surface with a mild abrasive (pumice or rottenstone) and mineral oil.
*To let the grain show and still have a deep black look you need to use a dye based stain. Also, if you use a dye that you can add to the finish in addition to staining the bare wood, you can get a really deep black. For an opaque black use a black paint and topcoat it. Oak has deep pores -- if you want a glass smooth finish as well, use a paste wood filler to fill the pores. If you're intersested in the process-- I did a black table top in oak for my video Coloring wood. (avaialable through this website)Just replace the white paste wood filler I used with black.Jeff Jewitt
