Does anyone know how poly acts when put over shellac. I’m using some amber shellac on dark stained Quarted white oak, and while shellac works fine on molding and case work, I’m now on the stairs and wondering if and how poly will work on them? Thanks folks, anything will help.

A Google search for
"polyurethane over shellac" OR "poly over shellac"
gave about a dozen hits.
Great thanks!
The primary caveat is that shellac used under either oilbased or waterborne poly must be dewaxed or the poly will have little a adhesion. Dewaxed shellac makes a seal coat under poly.
Hi.
Poly over shellac works fine as long as you use dewaxed shellac. I do most of my work w/QS White Oak...see the forum gallery posts for my Arts & Crafts Picture Frames and my Arts & Crafts Chest of Drawers or Dresser...
I put dye down first, then a couple of coats of dewaxed garnet shellac..then pore fill with Bartley's gel stain, then do another coat or three of either garnet or super blonde dewaxed shellac...and then either top with shellac (see my picture frames) or with Old Masters Poly (see my dresser) and then sand with 400, the fine steel wool and wax with clear Bri-Wax. Everyone that touches the top of the dresser has to caress it...the smooth finish is very inviting to the touch..despite very porous White Oak.
