I am making some children’s nightstands, one out of Cherry and one out of soft Maple and a tough finish to take the abuse they are sure to see. I planned on using cherry tinted Watco to give them the color I am looking for but am concerned that I need to add additional protection. Can I put polyurethane over the Watco?

Sure, no problem. Allow your Watco to cure thoroughly though, or the polyurethane varnish will take very long to cure. You can tell your Watco is ready for overcoating when it pretty much doesn't smell any more.

*Waiting for the Watco to dry can take very long. I agree with Dave about how to do it, but why? Use a much faster drying wiping stain if all you're after is the color - then poly. Personally, I'd forget the poly and just use the Watco and wax. If they're really going to take that much abuse, poly won't hold up. At least oil and wax is easily repaired and maintained.
