David,
Go to http://www.pooltableplans.com. These guys have designed and built a beautiful table in a mission style that is probably adaptable to other styles as well. My only concern, raised by my pool playing friends, is how playable is a table that you build yourself versus a top quality model that you purchase? I must admit it's given me pause. I desperately want to build one when my "boys club" room is finished but the table I get has to be playable. Please let me know if you build one. I'd like to get more input.
Thanks,
Kell
FWW had an article a number of years ago (10-15, maybe) about building a table. I have a photocopy of the article as it was published before I discovered the magazine. I'll try to find the article and forward on the issue number. If someone around here has purchased the new CD, I'm sure that article would appear.
One thing I heard later about the article was that some of the dimensions for the rail pieces were incorrect. If you use the article as a guide, be sure to check into it.
At one time I too had plans to make a table. I even went so far as to buy a cheap table just for the slate. In the end, I opted to purchase a table and sold off the "cheapie". I decided that the cost of the materials almost equaled the cost of a decent table. My wife and I shopped around a bit and chose a model that appeared to be well constructed. We ended up with a "Golden West", made in Oregon, I believe. We've never been dissatisfied.
Good luck.
