I’m not having very good luck in getting acceptable results with Fuhr’s 255 urethane (water-based finish), sprayed with my Lemmer 928G HVLP gun that’s hooked to a 5 gallon compressor rated for 6.5 cfm @ 40 psi. I should mention that I usually set the compressor to about 55 psi and ease back with the cheater valve that’s located on the gun, to bring the pressure down to where it optimizes atomization. Note, however, that I’m having trouble getting fine atomization without getting what may be more over-spray than desirable.
The surface comes out slightly orange-peeled on the third coat and doesn’t improve with more coats. It’s been mentioned to me by an experienced user of HVLP spray systems similiar to mine, that I may need to shoot it thicker to allow it to properly level out. I subsequently asked Fuhr to contact me about this issue, but while I’m waiting for their tech help staff to get back to me, I’d be interested to hear of your experiences with this product, sprayed with an HVLP system similar to mine. Further, I’d be interested in any comments you may have with spraying any of the Fuhr water-based products. I’ve used their pre-catalzyed lacquer with much better success (although it’s not been outstanding) and Minwax’s Polycrylic, with pretty good results. The reason for me going to Fuhr’s urethane is that I’ve a kitchen job lined up and think the finish would stand up better than the lacquer would.

I have sprayed Fuhr 355 a lot with good results. The key is to lay down a good thick coat by spraying across the grain then with the grain. It self levels beautifully. Post yur question at http://www.homesteadfinishing.com. The guys there have a lot of experience spraying Fuhr products.
Thanks for the tip, as I'm likely not spraying it thickly enough. I'll have to try it out on some test pieces, then see what else I may have to do.
