I have to drill pilot holes into poplar for four 6 x 1 1/4″ oval head screws in order to attach a pull handle to a cart. I understand that the diameter of the hole depends on whether I’m dealing with a hard wood or a soft wood. Is poplar is a hard or a soft wood? Also, I’ve read conflicting instructions on how deep to drill the holes. After insertion of the screws into the handle, they extend just about 1 1/4″. How far shall I go? Thanks.

Poplar is botanically a hardwood (an angiosperm), but it is soft in terms of dentability, etc.
I'm afraid I don't entirely understand the hole depth question. In general I drill pilot holes about as deep as the screw will go.

*Bill, for #6 x 1-1/4" screws through a handle into poplar, I would pre-drill with a 1/16" bit about 1/2" or 3/4" deep. You want the bit to be just a little less than the outside diameter of the screw threads. You can get self-centering bits at Rockler and other stores that make this job easier.Mike
*Bill, If your drilling holes like this and whether your using hard or a soft wood, drill some holes in some scrap stock to get the best fit. I usually drill 3/4 (soft wood) of the way or the entire length of the screw (hard wood). As far as which diameter to pick, wellll, I'd go back to pre-drilling in the scrap stock to find the best grip for those threads in your chosen wood.
*There is a nice screw size chart here that can be downloaded and printed: http://www.woodmagazine.com/default.sph/wcontent_user.class?FNC=story__Acategory1_html___7___55___36___203
