Help! I am finishing a table that my husband just made with sapele veneers. I wanted a ‘glass like’ finish, so I used the pumice and linseed oil technique as described in Jeff Jewitt’s article regarding wood fillers.
I followed the directions, but noticed tView Imagehat after the linseed oil dried, I had a light gray film left on the surface. I thought maybe I could lightly sand it off with 600 grit carbide sandpaper – which didn’t work. I then tried using a little paint thinner to wipe it off – which looked great while wet, but dried with the same gray film – this time with wipe marks.
I’m not sure where to go from here – any suggestions? I’m desperate!
Thanks!

SK's Wife,
Take it easy. The gray film is from the pumice that is lodged in the pores doing its job as a filler. It will turn translucent when you apply your finish just like it did when wet with paint thinner. Incidentally, wetting the wood with mineral spirits is a good way to preview what the wood will look like under a finish and to check for glue spots and sanding scratches.
You may want to look at the surface in a glancing light to make sure the pores are completely filled before continuing with your finish.
