Hello: Has anyone used a portable air tank of the type used to inflate a car tire for short term use with air tools? Instead of lugging the compressor around for everything I was thinking it would last for an hours worth of finish nails or smallish staples.

It won't last very long. There's a few other options. One company makes a small compressor that hangs from your belt and you just use a long electrical extension cord. There's another company that makes a small C02 tank and regulator for quick touch up jobs. Then there is the Paslode Impulse or Senco battery pack gun.
Even with a brad nailer, you'll only get 3 or 4 brads in before the pressure drops below the level you need, probably 90 psi. Once that pressure drops, the nails will be proud of the surface at an increasing rate. You really need the compressor to keep the psi at 90 or there abouts.
