I am in the market for a portable planer.
I would love to hear any comments, positive or negative, about the different models available.

I've been very happy with my Delta 12-1/2" bench top planer. I bought it three yrs ago to resurface about 500 sq ft of redwood deck boards (that job more than paid for it - lol). Now, I use it in the shop (small custom woodworking business) at least weekly and it works great. I stone the blades fairly frequently and that seems to really help. Recently, I've noticed some slight ridges in the boards as they come out so I guess it's time to replace the blades.

I had a 12 1/2 delta. I loved that thing. It was a work horse. Then they came out with the 13" so as any good tool fool does, I got some snipe on some wood so i gave it to a bud and picked up the 13" delta.
Why it over the default? Well I think default customer support sucks. They are having some probs with their new model. Deltas service and parts availability are far superior. Not to mention I just like their planers.
Mistah T go to http://www.woodworking.org there have been some recent discussions on this subj as well as the probs with the default. not to mention they are just some nice people

I just bought the new Dewalt 13" planer and am very satisfied with it so far - I have about 1 hour running time on it. I had one of the old Delta 12" planers and finally burned up the motor after about 10 or 12 years and alot of running time. I have planed cherry, locust, and some walnut with the Dewalt, and even with the fast dimensioning feed rate it gives a very smooth finish - of course the blades are new.
The positive stop for common thicknesses is a nice feature, and I think the three blade cutter head helps give the nice smooth surface, even on fairly wild grain.
I've had the DEWALT DW733 for about a year now, and it runs fine. It can be a bit heavy to lug around on the job site though.
