i AM LOOKING TO BUY A PORTER CABLE 4112 DOVETAIL JIG. THIS JIG SEEMS TO BE A QUALITY UNIT WITH SUBSTANTIAL BUILD. HOWEVER, I HAVE NOT SEEN ONE IN OPERATION. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS UNIT? DO YOU RECOMMEND IT? IS IT COMPLICATED TO USE? I HAD A LEIGH AND HAD TO RETURN IT BECAUSE IT WAS JUST WAY TOO COMPLICATED.
APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT. JOE

Once set up it works well with decent repeatability. The only problem I had was when I burned up my dovetail bit, but that wasn't the jig's fault. I have one sitting idle, I upgraded to a 26"professional model.
Craig, did you have the 4112? the new model? why didn't you like it. is it complicated to use. if so, i dont' want one.
thanks, joe
It did OK work (the older model), and once adjusted it was reliable in the repeatability department. My main complaint was that it always seemed to be 1/4" or more too narrow for the stock I had to join, not necessarily a fault of the design or workmanship, just what I needed to do. I was going to sell it on ebay, but looking at the prices they get for them, I think it's worth more to me collecting dust. I'll use it again someday. I just needed a wider jig in the long run.

well, i ordered one today. the new model. it is very different. much more sturdy. suppose to be easy to use. i had the leigh and almost had a nervous breakdown using the stupid thing. my friend told me i was lame and he could get the leigh working. he is an engineer. he threw two pieces of wood into my shop wall. i promptly took it back. i'll post how the new one works. i saw one at the porter cable booth at the woood show, but they sold out by the time i went back.

Hmm. Maybe the leigh needs more engineering revisions.
very comical. really, it was just way too complicated for me. my friends are engineers, not me.
Jt,
Most of my friends are Engineers; computer, EE, mechanical, and chemical. None of, I mean not one, is able to do more than change a light bulb.
Mikeplease excuse my spelling.
well, you could rest assured that they could never usa leigh jig.
Is that model number the Omnijig?
No. the omnijig is their expensive one. i just want to know how difficut it is to use.
Hi Joe,
Please let us know how you like the new jig. Dont mean to hijack your thread, am currently trtying to decide which jig to purchase. Need something easy and repeatable myself. Will only be using it for multiple drawer boxes, nothing to creative, have been looking into the keller, and the PC 4212. The Akeda looks nice ,but I dont think i wanna spend that much.

I have the keller but can't find the directions. i saw the omnijig in operation and it does both at the same time and that kind of impressed me. my friend purchased one but brought it back because it was too big and the templates were so expensive. if you get the 4112 it has through dovetail and box joint templates with the kit. I will let you know how it works. i should have it this week.
