Porter Cable 693 Router Collet Question
Hello everyone, i’m new here and i’ve got a question for you.
I just bought a Porter Cable 693 router kit on Monday and i’ve found that the 1/4 collet is extrememly tight, so tight that getting bits in/out when its loose is nearly impossible.
Is there something i need to do? ie lubricate the collet or shank or is there a way for me to loosen it slightly. The 1/2 collet doesn’t suffer from the same problem, changing bits in it is relatively easy.
I ordered a spare 1/4 collet from Amazon with some quick release feature to see if it can rectify the problem, but i’d like to use the original one if possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I think all PC collets are now quick release. Have you tried to continue to loosen the nut? Mine hits a tight spot, then one more turn pops the bit right out.

yeah i can losen it till the point that the collet comes totally off the router motor and the bit is STILL tight as heck.
That other collect i ordered is quick-release so maybe it will be looser i guess.

One thing you can do is wrap 2 or 3 layers of silicon wet/dry sand paper onto a 3/16" drill bit and ream the collet out a little. I did that on one occasion.

Try removing the collet and cleaning the inside of the shaft and the out side of the collet. Then put a little paste wax on those surfaces .NB only those surfaces. It works for me!

Won't help getting them in, but to help get them out try this. Tap the side of the collet with the wrench lightly after you have lossened it. Amazing what a slight kick in the hinny will do to lessen the stubborness.
BTW, works on teen-agers also. ha..ha..
