The motor for my PC 691 died a couple of weeks ago after only 30 years of use. When I priced a replacement motor the the router, I found that I could buy a complete new 690 router (same motor) for about $50 less than it would cost to buy a new motor. Hard to understand why a single part for a router should cost more than a complete router, especially by such a large margin. Oh well, if I can now find someone to repair the original motor at a reasonable price I’ll have an extra router, Routers are kind of like clamps, it’s hard to have too many.

Parts
Want to get really scared ! Figure what it would cost to build an automobile with replacement parts.
setting prices
Remember, too, that it is the retailer who is setting the prices we pay, not the manufacturer - at least in Porter Cable's case. When I went shopping for a PC 7518 motor to put in a lift, one retailer had the motor separately, at about $50 less than the full router with base. That seemed reasonable to me.
How about printers?
Last I checked, ink jet printers seem to cost about the same as a cartridge.
printer cost vs. ink cost
Yep. I think the printer manufacturers learned that market strategy from the drug dealers. Get 'em hooked on the cheap, and then sock it to 'em on the "refills". ;-)
printer cost vs ink
actually, I think it was the razor blade companies that began this type of marketing... give away the razors for free and sell the only refill blades that fit the handles.... this is how Gillette became a huge successful company
