Check out the new recall notice on Porter Cable routers….

I’m still pissed over the fact that my local service center near Boston still has my recalled 423MAG circular saw. I took it in a month ago because some of the blade guards were sticking. As of today, they still haven’t worked on it. The parts are on “back order.”
What the hell is going on over at PC??

Had the same "back order" problem on a speed control in my PC 2-1/4 hp. router.... It took just barely under 2 months....even under warranty.
When I asked a local Home Depot friend to check what he could find out he said: "The part has come in twice, but both have been new but faulty. The third time it came in there was some "cross talk" between Black and Decker and Porter Cable as to who was paying for the older warranties that were before BD became Delta's and Porter Cable's new owner...."
It appears that other than the faulty motors of the 890 routers, and any liability issues that could come due to bad motor insulation are being handled very quickly, however other warranty work will continue to take a long time....
I'm looking toward Bosh or Makita for future purchases until Black and Decker can get its act together with Delta and PC... I'll bet Black and Decker is still honoring and repairing any DeWalt problem in a heartbeat....

You're right about that! I have a DeWalt miter box that I had to take in a couple of years ago because the brake stopped working on it. It was still under warranty, so getting it fixed was no problem. I think I had it back within a couple of days.
Ahh, the good old days. Sigh!!
I once had to take my RIDGID table saw (TS3650) to a service center to get the defective arbor replaced. The biggest pain was taking the thing apart in order to transport it. Also, the repair shop was an hour's drive from where I live. On the plus side, the repair shop was top notch and I had it back in a couple of days as good as new. Also under warranty, so no charge. Now, if RIDGID would just contract with more repair shops............

I have found out that sending tools out to be repaired was a waste of time and many times a ripoff. All the tool manufactures have web sites where you type in the model number of the tool and you get a schematic blowup. You can then copy down the part numbers and order them over the phone with a credit card.
I just threw away two PC 5 inch ROS, they were poorly designed and needed repairs too often. The older tools were well made.
Repair shops are a big scam, putting new parts in tools is very easy. If something really goes bad, like you burn out the armature, you have to buy a new tool anyway.
Check out this thread, and you'll find that so far folks seem to be getting very prompt service on the routers.

Like MANY out there.. Cutting costs to stay alive.. You are a COST!
Sort of joking but TRUE!
Sorry to hear that I'm a "cost." I actually thought I was a source of "revenue" for them.
Well, the joke's on them. I will no longer buy anything from PC (though I do plan to keep my great little 690 router as the thing was made before the B&D merger and is nearly bomb proof!!).
If I ever get my PC circular saw back from the repair shop, I'll probably sell it on e-bay and buy a Milwaukee.

With all this bad feedback about new PC routers, does anyone have a consensus about where to go now? I am looking at 2.5 horse or better, intriqued by the Triton (although I though it looked kinda cheaply made) and the Milwaukee (I have a Milwaukee circular saw from about 15 years back-built like a tank, but the way things in manufacturing are it's best to check with folks that have a current model).
Thanks,Radish
the Milwaukee router gets good reviews, the DW621 dewalt is consistently at the top of the ratings, and also look at Freud for a great router at a fair price.
Sorry to jump in late but..
Called PC. Took my recalled router to an authorized repair shop 30 miles away. No replacement but they would send it in!? Another call to PC. Next to another authorized repair shop another 30 miles. Same story.
Another call to PC. Explained I wanted a replacement NOW, not next week or next month. PC then sent me to an authorized service center -- 20 miles away.
Walked in. Laid motor on table. Name and address. Walked out with NEW motor. Was going to the final town (Little Rock) to shop anyway.
Conclusion: BIG difference between authorized repair shop (no parts or replacements) and a full service factory authorized repair center. Most parts on the shelf. Delta, DeWalt, PC, and others! (May have store titles wrong.)
No complaints, just minor irritation. But am worried about B&D now owning PC and Delta. Have had very poor results with most B&D things. Will wait and see.
Side note: Yes, we are revenue to sellers but costs after the sell! Life is tough but it is a lot tougher if you are dumb. <grin>

I have two 890's affected by the recall. Have to say it was an irritation and a problem having two routers down. But PC was good about the recall. Got two call tags and sent my motors down to the Wichita, KS service center and the new ones were back within days. But I'm close and UPS Ground is one day. Seems like the Wichita service center has its act together. But I'm phasing out PC. Just sold one of the new 890's. I was never that happy with them. Housing/base would clog, they both had runout, and the base locking lever broke the first time I used it (it was replaced) and they had an annoying habit of the collets getting too hot to touch even if not under load. I believe this is a bearing issue. Only bought them based on experience with the 690's. Crude but reliable. Can't say that about new PC tools.I'm trying to switch to Milwaukee but I just bought a new 5625 that has an issue. Play in the motor shaft. Hopefully its just a lemon. I also have a 5615 with .0045 runout which is just under their .005 allowance. Could just be bad luck but I recently found out that Milwaukee was bought out about a year ago by the parent company that owns Ryobi.Maybe Festool is the answer. OUCH! But I'll see how Milwaukee handles the issues and decide.

This is the first time I've heard about Milwaukee bein purchased by TTI! Is this true??TFToolfanatic (a.k.a. The man formerly known as "Toolfreak")
Never mind. I found it.http://www.milwaukeetool.com/us/en/news.nsf/vwPressReleaseArchive/3C2EB0635A07E7B486256F800061F1BA?OpenDocumentTFToolfanatic (a.k.a. The man formerly known as "Toolfreak")
Yup, not real encouraging. Its a big stink on the Milwaukee tool forum. Apparently they may be in the early stages of "cleaning house". Hopefully Milwaukee won't drop down to Black & Decker quality. I've been in touch with Milwaukee regarding the two issues that have come up with the routers. They are sending a call tag for factory service, hopefully it won't take too long.
I am (was?) a fan of PC and Delta but I am very concerned since B&D purchased them. I very much dislike B&D as I have had very bad luck with them. I also dislike Ryobi. The tools I have from them are also of a low quality. Now with Milwaukee possibly going south, I am about ready to give up on American brand names. I realize that many, if not most, are made elsewhere but the problem is not where they are made but how much poor quality our American brand name companies are willing to accept!
If our power tools continue to go down in quality, what does the future hold for us? Harbor Freight? God what a nightmare!
Do British, Australians, etc. also suffer from poor quality power tools?
What are the "good" brands in other countries and other continents?
Anybody willing to comment?

Toolfanatic,
Sorry to hear the PC center in Boston is no better than the one in Anaheim CA - they've had my 423 Mag for 5 weeks now. They're muttering about shipping me a new one since they can't seem to get parts either. They're service leaves a lot to be desired.
Bob
They should just recall all of the 7529/8529 routers they built and give everyone's money back. That router is truly a letdown.
