Zokay, I have a grand total of 2 Knots members (besides moi) who have piped up for a gathering in Portland. Add that to the 5 from WWA and my brain comes up with 8 total. I’ll copy the post I made at WWA here, and you (Ricks503 and ButchF18A) can chime in with what you’d like to do. Drop me an email if you want, that’s OK too!
Show starts at Noon on Friday and 10am on Saturday and Sunday.
People who can meet on Friday:
baldcutter (first name, please); indicated evening
Popeye
Ricks503 (Knots)
ButchF18A (Knots)

People who can meet on Saturday:
Popeye
Mikie

Butch lives across the river and has recommended Beaches Restaurant and Bar as a good eatery/drinkery with nice atmosphere. Peter gave us a list of places too, in the original thread, I’ll print it out and bring it with me. Tuscany Grill sounded good (Italian).
I have a couple of ideas, to wit (and not in order of any preference).
a. We could meet at the food concession on Friday around noon, easy enough to do. Maybe make plans for dinner for those who are footloose and fancy free, save the good food and drink for when we have time to enjoy it. Spouses and significant others more than welcome of course (mine’s out hunting deer that weekend though View Image
b. We could meet for lunch (suggestion Beaches) on Friday around 11am and caravan to the show together.
For sure, I think we should make a time to meet Saturday at the show so those who weren’t there on Friday can join in the fun. Maybe around Noon or 1pm at the food concession area.
One more thing — I had an idea, see what you think. How ’bout bringing a woodworking book (or 2 or 3) that you think has been especially helpful, but maybe not know by all, and we can pass ’em around and take looksees? I also might bring a handful that I don’t need any longer, in case someone else could use them.
OK, chime in folks!

So this is what has been going on lately. I'm in the process of moving and disconnected internet service at home in Wash. I'm in Oroville now and I thought I might be returning tonight, maybe not... If I can make it back in time, count me in, too.
Hey, Brian, welcome back!!! So, you came to rest in Oroville, eh? Tell ya what, we still don't have specific details, but in case you can't check back in before Saturday -- I'll hang out at the food service area in the exhibition hall at around 1PM on Saturday, whether or not the rest of the group is there. Also, if you have email right now, drop me a line and I'll send you my cell number.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
" ''' I'll send you my cell number."Do WW shows count for work release time?(sorry, couldn't resist it .....)
No - Commmunity service1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
Do you have any details on this show. I am going to be in Portland this weekend. I am heading down from Canada to Philly to pickup my C&C machine and would love to take in a show. Will be in Portland most of Saturday though.

Hi,
New to the group and I have been at the Portland show each of the last three years. Unfortunately this year it looks like I will only be able to be there on Sunday afternoon as they close down. Have a great time!
ORGramps
Hey, Gramps, sorry you can't make it on Saturday. GregR from the WWA forum is also confined to Sunday. He's a great guy, I can testify (attended the summer Knots party with no misbehavior, LOL). You can find him in this thread:

Introduce youself!! Len might be there on Sunday too (Len = "Popeye") Have fun!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
UPDATE: Butch can't come, he has to work (that's what he calls flying, LOL) the whole darned time. At this point it looks like there will be a pow-wow at 1PM on Saturday at the Expo food center. That's tentative though, still waiting to hear from a couple of folks.
Anyone want to meet on Friday?? I should get into Portland around Noon or so.

Hey FG,
I'm going on Saturday. I'll have my 8-yr. old with me so I'm not really set up for pub crawling (not to mention that one of my favorite downtone brewpubs is closed for remodeling!). But we'll be around the food consession at the appointed time on Saturday.
Just look for a pudgy, middle-aged guy with graying beard and a ponytail - uh, never mind, that describes about half the attendees at the show. ;)
"uh, never mind, that describes about half the attendees at the show." ROFL!!! Yeah, but how many are brave enough to bring their 5-year-old with them?!!!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
He's actually 8 now, and is no slouch. He can pick out the Forstner bit from a collection of drill bits, and can explain to his mom the difference between a jointer and a planer.
Oooops, my mistake. My grandson is 8 yrs. also, but I keep thinking of him as a 5-year-old, because it's scary him growing up so fast I guess. (Grandson by marriage, since I have no kiddos). Yours is off to a fine start!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
I hope your Portland show is better than Chicago was last weekend. Attendance was miserable and the show seemed light on vendors. Their website was way late in getting it all together.
MandyJoy
It was pretty good. The shows have had fewer vendors over the past several years primarily because of the internet, IMHO, and most recently because disposable income is so, so far down.
Lee Valley and Leigh were there with their planes and other high-end goodies. There were two new products at other booths that I'm interested in, small stuff, but new and clever I thought. Stainless steel sanding discs at one, and these "spring-snap" tools at another.
I was hoping to see the new Powermatic cabinet saw, but they hadn't arrived at the dealers yet. Epilog laser had two of their machines there, and I spent some time talking with them about a friend who needs some work done on an ongoing basis.
PeachtreeUSA took up a huge percentage of the floor space, and I got a little tired of them after awhile, but with TWC having gone belly up, I think it was the ol' vacuum-filling principle at work.
More later, I'm out of steam.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Thanks for the review, Jamie.I'm thinking I'll want to attend the show in Puyallup (April next if memory serves) so when the time approaches let's do the gathering thing. I might even get Robbie to tag along.Nawwhhhh - she'd put the kybosh on any non-descretionary spending!!
"let's do the gathering thing. I might even get Robbie to tag along." Sure, absolutely!! Oops, saw your note about kyboshing. Hey, one of the companies was running a painting class there. Was wondering if it was to keep the "ladies" entertained, but there were several gentlemen there also.

I think actually Robbie will probably take advantage of the road trip South to visit one or more of her friends she doesn't get to see very often/anymore! (grin) But let's do keep an eye on that Puyallup gig. Perhaps we could meet you at the ferry dock and gather up a car full to avoid potential high parking costs, etc. Although gas is getting so cheap these days (NOT!) -hehehe-
We were at the food concession at 1:09 on Saturday (got there later than I thought; traffic even on Saturday); didn't see any group that looked promising (and reading through the threads again I'm not sure that was the meeting time); oh well no big deal and I had my best buddy with me.
LV was taking orders with no shipping charge (and being Oregon, no sales tax, either). So I ordered couple of those super-sale Bessey K-body sets, and a few other things.
At the L-N booth, I ordered my first 'real' plane, at 10% off and again no shipping.
At the Western Tool Supply booth, I picked up the Bosch 6" ROS I've been wanting to get; $10 off and less than Amazon.

Barry, I'm really sorry we all missed each other on Saturday. I wandered by the rear-concession area probably just before you did! Part of the problem was that there were two concession areas, the back one was the one with tables.
Western Tool was doing big business!! Kinda interesting though -- I asked them about the Jet clamps, and the guy told me that because of the Bessey display, they decided not to bring the Jets, didn't want to "confuse" people. Confuse?? I suspect they didn't want them placed side-by-side. It's sounding to me like the new Jet parallel clamps are pretty darned good.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Yes, the consession layout was different than last year; it was weird having the tables at the far end of the hall.
I don't view these shows as a money-saving exercise, either. Mostly to see new tools first hand (I don't know how else I'd see Laguna or MinMax), maybe hear an interesting talk or two, and a father-son male bonding experience.
There's a local Western Tool only a couple of miles from work. They used to primarily deal with contractor tools, but they are carrying more and more woodworking tools there now, at good prices. They are now a good alternative to HD and Lowes, as those two seemed to be shifting more toward cheaper DIY-class tools (not to mention alot of their tools turn out to be used, due to their too-liberal return policy).
Sorry to have missed everyone, I got there at 11am and the food court was inside the exhibit and they were not letting anyone in. When they opened the doors I was 4th in line and went to concession stand and waited around for 10 min but no one showed.
The seminars were rather pitiful. The one on the saw blades, one of the few I was interested in was cancelled.
I liked the Keller booth, Dave Keller was there doing the spiel and demos.
The local Rockler was there and they are having a nice sale next weekend on 4S4 shorts of hardwood, including hard Maple.1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
Hi Rick. The meet-up time was 1PM. Sorry for the confusion!
I've never thought much of the seminars, but they're free most of the time, so.....oh well. Seems like they're targeting the intro people who haven't read very much on their own.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Glad to hear it went OK. I did read the post somewhere about TWC dropping out. Delta took up a huge section with a trailer, tent-like overhang and lots of seats for 'performances' but I didn't see any going on while I was there.
I spent most of my time watching and talking with the local wood turner's club. It was costly though since I purchased a Jet Mini lathe after being enamored with its capabilities for a small size...plus I can put it in my purse (It's a big one!) and carry it where I want, like work outdoors near the garden when the weather's nice.
I'll be going down to Indy in January where my son and I have taken in the show the last few years. There's always a huge crowd at that one.
MandyFostering the artistic rebirth of trees.
If you've never been to a woodworking show or just getting started it would have been interesting but I was dissapointed. I specifically went because LV was going to be there, but you couldn't buy anything and take it home. The "special" was order it at the show and get free shipping.
$7 parking, $9 entrance fee, 4-5 gallons of diesel @ $3 a gallon just bumped up the price of what I could order. I could have stayed home and "ordered it".
In their defense though, I had no idea their catalog was so big, but they could have brought some inventory, at least of the more popular items.
I did buy a Jet air filter at a decent price with a $25 rebate.
And guys, nice combovers!
Well I gotta go, my mouse is getting cold.
MJ
Over the Hill? What Hill? I didn't see any Hill!
I gave up a couple years ago thinking of the shows as money-savers (over and above the cost to attend). At least for the stuff I buy, they're not. But now that I'm getting to know people locally via the forums, it's a fun networking things, and they're helpful in evaluating any new products that have hit the market. Len/Popeye (mostly a WWA person) took me around and introduced me to people at the Northwest Woodworking Guild, showed me some wood he had provided to MiniMax for their bandsaw demos, spent time talking with Mike-the-GripTite-guy (hi, Mike, I know you're lurking) and for me, it was kindof a vacation.

I will be there Friday, where and when do you want to meet?1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
Hi, Rick. Well, Len and you are the only Friday people I've heard from yet; he would like to meet at the food service right there at the show, at 1:00PM, and that seems like a good idea. So! See you there?? I'll be wearing jeans and a green or blue top (probably), wearing a black "fanny pack" type purse. I'll see if the Freud rep will pin one of their bags to the back of my shirt. :-))forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
