This seems like such a simple thing, but it makes me crazy, every time.
Whenever I spray, getting the finish from a full gallon can into the quart spray cup leaves a mess. Every time. Does anyone have any tried and true tips for what out to be a simple procedure?

Filter and a filter stand? You know, the paper filter cones with the net screen at the point... I have a cheap Harbor Freight one that works great with my gravity feed guns. It'll work with my HVLP cup as well, but it isn't designed for that.
I've tried many different methods to get finishes out of the cans. Funnels, using a cup or scoop, etc. Honestly the best thing I've found are those flexible plastic spouts you tuck into the lid groove... You know, the cheapo ones you get at the paint counter. They keep the excess out of the lid groove and are usually pretty easy to clean up.
Which reminds me, I need to grab a couple more next time I hit HD.
Search for "Shur-line pour and store" they work great!
I've used the snap on pouring spouts before, but they always leaked, badly. That Shur-line is new to me though. I'll give it a try. Or it's back to the ladle until a quarter or so of the can is empty.

That looks like a great solution. Thanks!
In a pinch, I’ve used wide blue painter’s tape to bridge the rim.
