Looking for help on my Powermatic 66.
I’m in the process of readjusting the tilt mechanism. The instructions and other guide books do not really give good advice on how to properly do this. I have spent hours trying to get the turn handle to operate smoothly and with out play. When I think I have the right setting, there is still movement in the trunion at 10 to 20 degrees. Need help from owners of powermatic 66s. Looking for a proper procedure or order of steps to take to make this easier and to work.
Thanks in advance for all your help.

Whiteoak,
We've got a couple 66 saws and I've had one of them for 20 years. I haven't had any problems like what you're talking about but will play with one of them tomorrow. There are quite a few who have this saw and I'm mostly bumping this back to the top of the list with this post in hopes that someone else might know what's going on with your saw.
Thanks Larry for your response.
I called Powermatic technical help 800 number. They offered some suggestions and stated that there will be some play in the trunion but should not affect the saw cut. Great customer service did not wait long on the phone and the person was understanding and helpful. I gave it a try and adjusted it a to where I think it should work out. Thanks again.
I just purchased a 66: haven't even got it yet(still shipping) . Can you give me any advice about what to expect? Any setup, really?

Well, It will be heavy, Comes in about 5 boxes. The stand with the table and motor is the heaviest at about 300#. It's a snap to setup once you get the base where you want it. I had trouble with the angle scale for the arbor tilt being mounted on the wrong radius causing inaccuracy. I had to remount it. The guide bar for the fence had the ruler mounted in the wrong location. PM sent me another one and I had to install it. This was real tricky because the glue used is really aggressive and hard to clean off. The arbor angle stops for 0 and 45 were loose. I had to set and tighten them. Check for burrs on the mating edges of the extension wings. These should be smooth before installation. The fence is a bit tricky to install. You ned to get the height of the rail just right prior to drilling for the table board. I installed the whole fence system and made sure it operated properly prior to installing the table board. If you install the table board and find you have the rail too low you will have to slot the holes in the table board to get it flush with the top or the reverse if it is too high. This could be a problem. Do not hesitate to call PM if you have a problem. They even sent me an extra table board for an outfeed table because of the problems I had. They originally offered me a tenoning jig but I already had one.
Good Luck

One more recommendation - inspect the bottom of the miter gauge for burrs before using. Mine had some minor burrs on the bottom front edge which resulted in some minor scratching on the iron top - purely superficial yet totally avoidable.
Also, when wiring up the starter, I would recommend against using the provided rubber 'O' rings used to seal up the hole where the cord to your electric supply runs into the starter box. Use a couple of wire clamps that will actually hold the wire in place if someone were to trip over the cord.
Be sure to inspect the boxes carefully - mine arrived with some shipping damage and two broken parts. If the crate or the other boxes arrive staved up, the saw or the parts may be as well - consider rejecting the shipment.
Have fun with the new toy.
