I just realized, I don’t know anyone who uses a Powermatic band saw (or do I?). Can anyone out there speak to experience with them (the usual 14″ home-shop type)???

Dear FG,
I looked real hard at a PM 14" and decided that it was basicly the same as the Delta & Jet. The package wasn't a bad deal, fence & light included, but I opted for a 16" Minimax. Now it is a whole lot more money, but I only want to buy it once. Or at least that is the theory!

I have the Powermatic 14" model44 band saw. It has never given me any trouble...only 2 years old. Good point is resaw...will handle a 3/4" blade, which makes much better cuts than a 1/2. Think of it...50% more blade than a 1/2". Only thing I did not like, and did not know when I bought it...it's made overseas! I thought they were made in USA. I called Powermatic when it arrived, after I realized where it was made and seems like all the low end stuff is Asian made. Larger stuff still made here. But all around I would not trade it.

Thanks, everyone. I'm collecting info for an on-line friend and will pass it along.forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
The older ( before WMH purchased them ) 14" saws are a one piece cast iron frame. They made two 14" machines, a single speed and an eight speed with an oil bath transmission. Metal/pattern shops use the eight speed, very plentiful supply here in MI. Many shops use them to cut carbon for EDM machines. At auction they go for $200-$500 often with a dust collector.
FG: Below is a press release on the new Pm 14" band saw . It just started to be available to dealers the past few months,. The info in not on the web site yet but if you get a new 2004 wood working catalog you can see it on page 104, the unit looks great , but have not used it yet. Ben
