Until today, I’d just assumed the mobile bases made by Powermatic for their machines, specifically the mod. 66 saw w/ 50″ extension & the mod. 60A jointer, would be the best fit & “best bet” for a mobile base for said machine. Until I put much weight in the review on Amazon for Powermatic’s bases, I’d like to get opinions here from people who’ve used them. What model # base, year of machine manufacture, any troubles you’ve had, necessary modifications, etc. Has someone out there shop-made a better one?
The saw and jointer (and 15″ molder/planer) will be centrally located in an 18’x18′ garage in a more-or-less triangular layout, so all machines will be able to handle a 10′ board (w/ garage door down). If my proposed machine layout actually works (not sure of jointer height @ top of fence), I’d probably keep them stationary … but, just in case, I’d like to be able to move them around – you know? You just never know when you’re going to need a little extra space to maybe … assemble something, or have hoe-down, or whatever!

Don,
My only expereince with store boughts is Shop Fox...it works. However, like most, it comes with two fixed wheels and two 360 degree wheels. I'm going to swap out two of the wheels so all for will be 360s. I can get the appropriate wheels at Grizzly for $4.95 each.
Don,
I have the wide 66 on a PM base and I have nothing but good things to say.

Don:
Like BG, I am using a Shop Fox base. It's on my Powermatic 64A tablesaw. I just got the wheels for Christmas and have not used it enough to decide if I want to change the two fixed wheels for two 360's. Having the saw on wheels in my little shop has helped a bunch.

I have a Powermatic 60a jointer, purchased about a year ago. I bought the PM mobile base because I wanted one that fit that machine exactly. I was surprised to find out that it did not fit, and the people at Powermatic were bothered because I thought that it should (silly me). Anyway with a few chunks of wood on all four sides, it does work satisfactorily. If you are intersected, I even have an extra still in the box I'll make you a good deal on (seriously).
Good luck,
Richard
