Ladies and gents,
I am seriously considering purchasing the new Powermatic PM 2700 shaper but I can’t find any real motor specs on this thing. Does anyone know who makes the motor on that bad boy, what the duty rating on the motor is and what the actual current draw is going to be? I am looking at either the 3 hp or 5 hp 230 V single phase setup. My local PM rep can only tell me that the 3 HP needs a 30 amp circuit and the 5 hp needs a 40 am circuit. This seem like quite a bit of current for that size motor.
If any of you have that machine or have worked with it, any comments you have would be greatly appreciated. I will be using this in a home shop, but I expect it to last the rest of my life and well into someone else’s.
Thanks
Steve
P.S. I also posted this over at Breaktime. I appologize in advance for any confusion this might cause.

I also have the PM2700 shaper on my short list and hope to get one around the end of the year.
I currently have a bunch of Powermatic stuff in the shop and have noticed a theme with their motors. they rate them on a continuous duty cycle, not any kind of "peak" or "max" output people are fudging with today. Consequently, the Powermatic motors (Baldor actually makes their motors I think) run stronger than anything else I have seen.
I will get the 3 Hp PM2700 because I can't imagine me needing 5 Hp (especially Powermatics 5 Hp) in a non production shop.
I don't have the amp figures for the PM2700 but again, my experience with their 220V motors is that they run easy and have yet to strain my simple 220V circuit in my shop.

Tom,
Thanks for the input. I too am starting to head toward Powermatic - mostly due to local suppliers. I got a PM 8" jointer last year and have been very pleased with the results. As you mentioned, it has way more power then I need and really does an outstanding job. I imagine most if not all of my future purchases will mostly be Powermatic with the exception of the One-Way lathe I am lusting after.
I am leaning towards the 3 hp unit so I don't have to pull new wire into the walls. I am going to be running a set of cabinets for a friend after moose season is over, and I kind of expect one of my neighbors will be looking for a run of T&G flooring. I'll post a review once I have everything up and running.
Thanks for your advice.
Steve
