My wife is antiqueing a cabinet with water based paints but would like a more durable finish. Would pre-cat lacquer be a viable solution? Thanks, Art

Test it on some scrap. In general, lacquer based finishes contain solvents that will interact with waterborne finishes.
That will almost certaintly be a problem. Contact your local profesional finishing supplier (Sherman Williams Comercial Coatings is one of the best) and ask them what primer/sealer would allow that. In general if the top coat is catalysed then the sealer also has to be catalysed. I have had success applying Shellac then a vinyl sealer then PreCat over that. the Shellac protected the paint work from the sealer.
Pardon my spelling,
Mike
Make sure that your next project is beyond your skill and requires tools you don't have. You won't regret it.
Thanks Mike, I'll try he shellac. Arr
