I’m making some shelves, and wanted a dark finish veneer on it. Wenge is a little out of my budget, so I was thinking of a very dark stained veneer. Is this a good/bad idea? What inexpensive veneer would be a good start? What is the danger in staining the veneer before applying it to the substrate? Because of the construction of the shelves, and wanting to hide the fasteners, it will be easier to partially veneer it before assembly. I want to do something similar to the below, or attached file. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Coloring veneer before gluing is nearly impossible, at least I've never had any luck with aniline dyes.
Constantine's has some imitation dyed veneer, that might work for you.

There's a large company named Tabu Veneers who specialize in pre-dyed and reconstituted veneers. If you do a bit of searching you should be able to find a US outlet. I'm just not sure if they will deal in small quantities.
If that doesn't work out, you could use oak (rift-sawn red oak) veneer which stains to a decent imitation of wenge.
