Dear Knots Users,
For the past few months we’ve been alluding to some upcoming changes to Knots and www.FineWoodworkingNetwork.com. Over the next week or so we will be implementing these changes.
What to Expect
Once everything is complete, Knots will look a little different. Based on feedback we collected from forum members early this year, we have remodeled the forums so that all of the woodworking topic folders are available in a single view (no more clicking between forums). We will also be expanding the Knots Classifieds into its own forum. And the members-only Ask the Experts forum will get a new homepage.
Perhaps the most significant change will be to the name of this site. All of Fine Woodworking’s Web properties will be available under one common URL, www.FineWoodworking.com. This includes the hundreds of articles and videos available to members of the for-pay site, the free Tool Guide and Gallery, our online bookstore, and the customer service tools for magazine subscribers.
Knots in Read-Only Mode
In preparation for these upgrades, for a short time next week we will be setting the forums to read-only mode . This should last just a few hours. During this time you may experience some technical issues with the site.
How will this Affect Forum Members?
These changes WILL NOT affect any registered user accounts. All screen names, usernames and passwords will be preserved. You will not have to create a new account to access Knots.
Any questions or comments can be emailed to [email protected]. Please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Regards,
The Fine Woodworking Team

Matt, will my bookmark work the first time?

Thanks for catching this FG. Some URL's may change but we are setting up redirects to handle those. - Matt
Why bookmarks are important (to some of us):Over the years I have bookmarked specific threads (or particular posts) at Knots (and Breaktime) for future reference. I have built a library of these bookmarks, and they are invaluable sources of info.In changing your system around, it would be a shame if it were no longer possible to access this information through my own bookmark system.********************************************************

Forest Girl,
As we get closer to launch we will be providing more information on how to handle bookmarks and what it means for messages that you might have bookmarked. -Mark
"and what it means for messages that you might have bookmarked." Oh, man, that gives me a sinking feeling. If you had any idea of how many Knots bookmarks live in my Favorites!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Glad you raised that one , Jamie. I am PARANOID about my bookmarks/favourites and never got to the bottom of how they just went, pouf, gone, zilch , zero on two occasions past. Like you , the source of a lot of those references is Knots.Philip Marcou
Philip, I've had some weird problems with My Favorites a couple of time (Windows XP/Internet Explorer), so I now back them up periodically. If you're using IE, go to File, click on Import/Export, and it will guide you to doing this. It puts them in a separate file on your computer, and if something happens you can then import them back into IE.

Thanks, forestgirl, that's some of the best advise I've gotten for my computer. Another successful day (learned something I never knew).
You are most welcome. My pain is your gain, ROFL!!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Thanks Jamie- that is good for I.Xplorer but not Firefox, so my devious brain has told me to duplicate all my bookmarks from firefox into Int.explorer.....I suppose for overkill I could now export them from Int explorer to "my documents" or something?
Unless there is a way to do this for Fire Fox?Philip Marcou
I just looked at Firefox (I keep the program for emergencies, LOL). Rather disappointing that they don't have a back-up system for bookmarks. I took a rather quick look through Windows Explorer and didn't find where Firefox stores its favorites. If you could find that out from someone, that would help. You could just manually make a copy (renamed "bookmarksBU" or some such).
"I suppose for overkill I could now export them from Int explorer to "my documents...." Yep, that's basically where I keep my back-up copy. That way, if the copy that's associated with IE gets squirrely, I can simply import the last copy I made.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Forestgirl, Philip, & All.To backup the bookmarks in Firefox:Click on Bookmarks, drop to Manage Bookmarks and open it.Highlight the folder or bookmarks you want to save, or if you want to save everything open Edit, Select All.Then open File and click on Export.Save to any location you want including to burn a CD in D drive.
In Firefox go to bookmarks on the menu bar, choose manage bookmarks from the drop down list. When the bookmarks page comes up go to File on the menu bar and choose Export from the drop down list.
In Firefox, go to BookmarksManage Bookmarks. It will open up a new window. In that windows, go to FileExport. It will save your bookmarks in an HTML file, which you can then re-import from within Firefox, using FileImport.
Thanks Gene-have noted that.Philip Marcou

Thank you, thank you, thank you - lol
Will you provide us with an easy to find place to complain about the changes? If you've been paying any attention at all you'll know how important this is.
I heard FWW was purchased by Rodale.

I heard FWW was purchased by Rodale.
Really. . .
And who is Rodale?
It's a publishing company but my comment is an April Fools joke.Lee
I laughed when I read that, good one.
I read your post, and thought it was the best April Fool's joke I had read around here. But you are behind the times; Rodale sold Handyman (and American Woodworker) to the Reader's Digest Press some years ago.********************************************************

Can you imagine what Readers Digest would do with FWW? Even the most complicated projects could be covered in a single page, but as consolation we would get a joke at the end of each article.Andy"It seemed like a good idea at the time"
"...but as consolation we would get a joke at the end of each article." ROFL! Dead on.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Or amybe just a line saying the jokes on us?

RE: Bookmarks. One of theings I have done, is to copy the threads I am interested in to a WORD document and edit/clean it up and then save it to my hard drive, which I back up regularly. That way I can locate the info even if Internet is down.
1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1

Matt, change whatever you like, as long as it is not the joke section at the Cafe.
Hello,
I have sugggested in KNOTS (http://forums.taunton.com/fw-tools/messages?msg=7974.2) that a new section be added that would adress the recall situation on different tools.
It could be used by manufacturers and woodworkers in order to increase service to members and safety in the wookshop.
I hope you can include this suggestion in your WEB site modifications.
Thanks.
Hi Michael,
That is a great idea. I can tell you we did not a create a special folder in Knots for this topic. In fact, we had to trim down the number of folders in order to make this change.
However, we are publishing daily news articles on this site. (click on the "Network Home" link above). These include tool recall announcements. In fact, we published an article on Porter-Cable's router recall just a few days after it was announced.
I encourage you to check the home page every now and again if you're interested in these kind of news articles.
Regards,
Matt BergerFine Woodworking
