I have a Pro-tech Miter saw and I need help understanding how the fence works on this miter saw. I thought the fence would be straight. But if you look at the pictures attached, you’ll see that if I cut a long piece of wood, the cut is probably ok. But the board doesn’t sit flush against the full length of the fence. Only at the far ends.
But because the fence angles in, if I try to cut a short piece of wood, the wood is held at a slight angle to the 90 of the blade. So it’s difficult to get good cuts.
Am I just doing something stupid? Shouldn’t the fence be straight along it’s whole length?

The fence is bent. You can replace the fence or in this case I would just get a new saw. Look at the Makita ls1040.
That fence came like that new. I've been "using" this for about 20+ years.
If it's an old friend and you want to keep it you could make pads to bring the fence to flat. You will lose some capacity though.
