I posted this question twice under the turnings section, but got no response, so I’ll try it here. I’m fairly new to turning and consequently have been making small pieces, mostly handles and finials, to get comfortable with lathe work.
I have a Barracuda 2 chuck system from PSI. It seems that I have to tighten it frequently when I’m turning something, even after I’ve turned the blank to a cylinder and eliminated most of the chatter. I have to really tighten it down or it’ll work loose and throw the piece out of round.
Is this a common problem with lathe chucks or is it this particular company? It was considerably less expensive than other brands like Oneway or Nova.
Thanks for any help.

Shouldn't be happening....
Sounds like a defective chuck.
Who you callin' defective?
ChuckN and I have nothing of value to add to this discussion.
No you're not doing something wrong. That is common problem associated with three jaw chucks. The problem is eliminated with four jaw chuck but they are complicated to allign. Collets are better choice because they grip all the way around but make sizing difficult.
I'm not familiar with the Baracuda so I looked at one picture. Hard to see if that is four jaw or three jaw chuck. You might consider learning to work with an cup and dog.(Attach a spar on the head end with screws that slip fits in a cup on face plate. Use a dog or arm that rotates the stock.) I don't know. I'm just a patternmaker.
