Hi — I was planing some large timbers the other day and had my 2040 planer opened to the max. It worked fine and as always does a fine job but I cannot get it to close beyond this maximum opening. The threads and the adjustment handle are fine and do not appear to be slipping. It is as though when I opened the planer to approximately 8″ it is now beyond the threaded adjustment and will not close. Has anyone else ever experienced such an occurrence? I have done large material before and never had a problem but this time it is a different story. I do not want to tear it down if I don’t have to. Please advise!

I have had a 2030 for about 35 years or so. While I don’t recall ever having opened it up that wide, I do have to keep the 2 columns and lead screw lubed to help the table adjusting smoothly. Might try lubing the columns with a light penetrating oil and have some help lifting on both ends of the table while cranking the handle to get it started back up.
I had something similar happen on an old tablesaw. When I cleaned it, in preparation for the fix, I found an e-ring in the sawdust. The acme thread was no longer engaging the nut. I bet you'll find something similar, but I doubt you'll be saved from having to tear it all apart. Let us know what it winds up being.
