To all the turners out there. I bought a Henry Taylor fluted parting tool. you can see it at http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.asp?page=20269&category=1,330,43164,43180&ccurrency=1&SID=
anyway, it cuts very slowly and tends to make a lot of smoke which I think is caused by having the taper ground on only one side. when I checked it out with a good machinists square, one side was perfectly square, which is rubbing against the wood and bluing the left point. Is this a manufacturing defect or am I just using the tool wrong?

Its a defect ,you can make it work by parting two cuts side by side alternating cuts as you would with straight sided tool but why should you .Lee valley have a great return policy! By the way try using asaw guard protector on the underside to save your tool rest from getting notches fromthe flutes
