I want to protect outdoor furniture, which I sometimes make from woods not highly decay resistant, from fungal decay and possibly insects too. I live on a saltwater creek. I never paint my outdoor furniture, only use Thompson’s Water Seal once or twice a year. Thompson’s only protects from mildew. Years ago I used a penetrating Firzite product, putting it on the wood first, then after about a week used the water seal. I can’t find any such product now. Can you suggest a method and/or product?

unfinished,
Personally, I've never had much luck with Thompson. I know I've posted this before,
but one I've used is Olympic brand. However, I'm putting it on cedar siding which as you know is very decay resistant.
There are so many brands out there. Look for one that has a fungiside in it. If you have a well stocked paint store near you, I would start there. They tend to be a little more helpful with info than a big box store.
There was an article recently by Sean Clarke on a very permanent exterior finish.
If you contact Matt Berger in the expert forum, he 'll probably be able to send you the link.

Peter, as you suggested, I've researched water sealers online. The consensus seems to be 1) that the amount of EPA fungicide allowed "is so slight as to be of no use to the consumer," and 2) because of that, very few such "clear preservatives" are still on the market. That's probably why the Firzite preservative I used years ago is no longer available. I've now begun to find that there are fungicides like Timbor that claim to function both as fungicides and insecticides on wood and are easy to apply. So I'm considering using one of those before I apply a water seal.
I'll look for the Clarke article in my old copies of FW but I think it involved a polyurethane final coating and I don't want to do that.
Thanks much for your help.
