I’m pulling out double hung and fixed glass windows from a Victorian home. They’re original and all hold stained glass patterns with no storm window protection. Their finish is varnish/shellac as opposed to paint. I have to pull the sashes apart to free the stained glass panels for major repair. How may I facilitate these cope and stick joints to part?

Are you very sure that the glass isn't held in by putty or moldings? Assembling the outer sash around the glass was rarely done.

Of course you're right. But, I couldn't see the putty, it looked so solid. I've glazed windows myself with the old DAP33. I'll check again with a knife where the glass is missing--which is where I was looking the first time when I drew this conclusion. For argument's sake, still any ideas on loosening the joints?

Given the window's age, the glue is almost certainly hide glue, which can be loosened with water or more effectively with steam. Check that the joints aren't pegged which will mechanically lock the joint together.
