Hello to everyone-I am in dire need of some help, my son-in-law is a pastor down in Texas and has asked me to build him a pulpit. I have told him that this above my expertice but he still wants it Has anyone ever built one that can give me some idea where to get a plan that does not require a master furniture makerdegree Many thanks, bob black

I doubt if you're going to find many plans available for pulpits, and I don't really think you need one.
You know better than I that pulpits range all the way from dead simple to the very ornate and complicated.
If I were in your spot, I think I would visit a half dozen churches to see what they have. I would also ask my son to send me some very rough sketches on what he has in mind -- that would include some info on size, scope, wood specie, etc. Also, I would bet there are suppliers of pulpits that he would know about, and maybe you can accumulate a few catalogs to lead you along the path toward finding a useable design.
I did a google on "pulpits" and found this link:

So mainly you have to figure out what size is suitable for your son, and then pick a design that is compatible with your woodworking skills.
It is a nice thing to do. Good luck.

Hi Nikkiwood- really appreciate the advice and the site, they don't look to tough to build. Wish me luck.
P.S. thinking walnut
I built a rather simple pulpit for a church years ago. I used some nice plywood as the core and veneered it with some Red Oak veneer I bandsawed. The left side has a small ledge about 1/2 way up so notes wil not fall down.
Nice work on that! You took some real care with the flow of grain on the veneering. My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
looks real good=if I can make something that good I'll will sure be satisfied. thanks, bob
