Hi all:
I’m in the market for a bench top planer and most tool reviews select the Dewalt as the way to go — either the lower end 734 @ $400 or the higher end 735 @ $650.
I can’t quite determine what makes the 735 superior to the 734, besides it looking more beefy in the picture and having an extra 1/2″ capacity.
At the same time, Rockler is having a sale on the 735 this month for $550 with extra blades and infeed/outfeed attachments thrown in (another $100) so I’m leaning in the 735 direction. I don’t mind spending extra money for extra value, especially since I would like to buy one tool one time, and not go cheap and be aggravated for the next 20 years. Still, I would like to know the extra money is worth it.
Thoughts?

As I recall, the more expensive model uses a three-balde cutter head, vs. two in the less-expensive one. I'd suggest comparing the specs side-by-side to determine if the differences are worth the $$ to you.
Both machines have an excellent reputation among the users on various forums that I belong to. . Both use three knives and have a normal speed of 10K rpm. The 735 model has a slower speed supposedly for finish work or for particularly figured woods. The other major difference is that the 735 has a fan driven chip collection system. This would be useful only if you do not have an adequate dust collector with its own power. Incidentally, Amazon has the 734 for $350 with free shipping. I bought the 734 at a Lowes special for $300.

You might look at the Rigid planer at HD, I have one and have been pleased with it. My father has the Dewalt 735 and he has been pleased with it. If you have to pick it up or move it much the dewalt is heavier so that should be something you should consider

Thumbs up 735
I have the DW735 and use it to death. I sell both the 734 & 735 and the sales of the 735 are about 10 to 1 to the 734. The internal chip blower is a real plus. I do have a Jet 1100 CFM dust collector and have sometimes forgotten to turn it on while planing. The 735 had no problems shooting the chips through 20 feet of hose and into the DC bag with out it running.
The knives are super simple to change. TIP ! just snug the screws, NOT TIGHTEN. I also added a little dab of never-seaze to each screw at the first blade change. I also made a special order from DeWalt for the torx head knife screws, much easier to grab the screws that way.
I graduated from an old Delta 12" with no regrets at all.
DW735 with Byrd Head
Bruce,
What about going all the way and getting the Byrd head installed? Any customers going that route?
Don
Nobody has asked about a Byrd head yet. But, ouch the cost ! If I were to get a spiral head, it would be already installed in a 15" or larger planer. And still keep the DW735 for the finish work.
At $650 for the 735 with extra blades and infeed/outfeed attachments I would buy it in a heartbeat. Went to internet site and its $650 alone. Is the sale a local in store sale?
Rockler sale
It's 15% off the $650 plus the knives and outfeed table which means it's $550 for all of that. I guess that's the way I'll go even though the differences mentioned to date don't seem that significant. It's just that for such a small price difference ($550 vs. $400) it probably isn't worth any more thought.
I think the sale might be local to my Rockler store in Pleasant Hill, CA, because they're advertising it as a "Grand Opening" sale, even though the store has been there for years. I guess they're expanding their tool line

bench top planer
I have had a 12 inch Delta for about 15 years. I have used the time out of it but it still keeps perking. I read all of the reviews on the new models and my mouth is watering for one but the old Delta just won't quit. It has its quirks but I'm used to it so I guess I'll use it til it dies. Tempting to put a rock through it so I can get NEW ONE.
