I bought a beautiful hand carved craftsman style antique bed for $40 CDN. Only problem is that it came from a hotel and a client kicked out all of the foot board stiles, leaving big chunks missing from the original carving, where the stiles exited. Any suggestions on how to fix it? I think that a putty could be formed to match the pieces of carving missing but there is no strength in putty. Is there a good maleable epoxy? I’m open to any and all ideas
Cheers

Hi Mitt.
I agree with Kim. Clean out the damaged areas and insert a similar timber as deep as possible. If it is to be stained, or have a gloss finish applied after, it is important to find out the direction of the grain and match your replacement piece with this. Also to hide the end join place it against a strong cut in the original carving, or, if possible, change the original to run along the join. Have fun.
