I’m still a fairly new woodworker, and I’ve been cutting my teeth making wood boxes of various designs. I’m interested in expanding these into puzzle boxes, the kind that have a built in locking mechanism that hold some secret to open them. There seems to be very little about these puzzle boxes on the net. Anyone out there making these kinds of boxes that could give me some insight on where to find more info, or how to begin to make such a thing? I’d love to find an existing pattern to expand on, but so far I’m having no luck.
Thanks in advance for any help here.

Take a look at John Berkeley he specializes in Victorian and older puzzles largely turned and threaded. He has just published a book called All Screwed Up.His work may be rather too specific for you unless you are a turner.
Here are couple of links

I know exactly what you are going thru. I have been looking for book on them for years with no luck. I can ocassionaly find something simple like the Am Woodworker link one ( i have that issue for that project ) but looking for puzzle boxes or "chinese puzzle boxes" that require numerous slides and twists to open - Nada. If you have any better luck please let me know.
For wood puzzles, check out http://www.johnrausch.com/. I particularly have enjoyed building some of the puzzles in Stewart Coffin's book, available on that site. http://interlockingpuzzles.com/index.html is another place to look for inspiration; mouse-over the pics on the home page.
Nobody has mentioned http://www.cleverwood.com/ yet so check it out, even though this link is mainly good for ideas and examples. I especially enjoy the boxes by Kagen. I have unfortunately never came across anything substantial in terms of actually making them.
BTW, you should post some pictures of your boxes so far as well as your future projects. Many of us greatly enjoy admiring other's work. :)

These are the type of puzzle boxes I am interested in! Not the ones that Buxton linked to, althought those look like fun also.
Now does anyone know of any books on how to make them?
1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1

I don't think anyone gave this link yet: http://www.puzzlecraft.com/Projects/HTMAP/00title.htm
It seems to be an outline, with some parts fleshed out, for a book describing making wooden puzzles with high precision. It links to a puzzlecraft website with info, but no dates beyond 2003.
