This joint appears impossible because the top 1/3
of a square piece of wood is a dovetail the middle
1/3rd is open, the bottom 1/3rd is like a halflap.
When I was an aprentice 30 years ago, the master
of the shop made up this joint and I had to guess
how it was put together. Unfortunately over time I
have forgotten one detail. And I wonder if anyone
can respond as to how to make this joint.
Note, I can’t remember the name of this joint if
there is one and if you know what it is please let
me know that

Ken,
The joint you refer to I believe is drawn incorrectly in your picture. I believe the top view is right but the bottom view should be butted the other way around. The "secret" to this joint is that the dovetail is on a bevel so that it slips in from the end and 'rises' flush with the top. Maybe I'm wrong about this being the joint you are asking about. At any rate I hope this helps.
