I’m planning an entertainment center cabinet in my Craftsman Style home, but having trouble finding a source of quartersawn white oak plywood for the carcases. My local supplier has rotary- and plain-sawn white oak only.
Due to the conditions (finished basement), I think I need the dimensional stability of plywood for the cases, though doors and frames will be solid wood. The rest of the house has a traditional finish, but I’m planning to go natural in the basement to keep the room light.
Given the light finish, will there be a noticable difference between quartersawn or plain sawn? I’m assuming the rays will not stand out nearly as much as they would with a darker finish. Is quartersawn even worth it?
I’d appreciate any advice on the topic and a source for quartersawn if I choose to go that route.

Go to the yellow pages and look for a plywood supplier, locally, in Connecticut, the listing is under "plywood & veneer". Almost anything you can dream of is available in plywood, but it can get expensive. A plywood supplier should have no problem coming up with quarter sawn oak veneer.

I just finished a 1/4 sawn ent center using 1/4 sawn wt oak ply. it ran $110 a sheet. You will be able to find it.
Boulter Plywood carries it. You have to call them for quotes.

Hi RRGuy,
I've located a source here in Dallas..they have FOUR different cuts of White Oak ply in 1/4 and 3/4 sizes! While not cheap, if you need it you can get it.
I recently finished a large dresser in which all of the drawer fronts and legs, etc were QSWO..and considered using QSWO plywood but then decided to use plainsawn (not rotary cut...looks artificial). Had the panels (side panels and back panel) had ray flecks, etc, I think it would have looked to busy....kind of anathema for an Arts and Crafts piece.
You can find the pictures in the Gallery section under Arts and Crafts Dresser...or something like that. I'm extremely happy with the way it turned out..the nice white oak figure in the panels contrasts nicely with figure + ray flecking in the rest of the piece....plus I saved 40 bucks a sheet on WO vs. QSWO plywood.
Good luck. E-mail me at [email protected] OR go to my website (http://www.kesslercraftsman.com) and look in the "Portfolio" section to see a single picture of the dresser..and quite a few other A&C pieces with great figure!

Hey RRGuy...I found the post in the Gallery section...GOD I'm proud of that dresser.
Anyway, I've pasted two pictures of the non-QSWO plywood ends.....you'll see they're sweet!
Enjoy!
