I am going to build a gun cabinet after the holidays out of oak. I have never used a wood filler (grain filler) and after some research, not sure I want to. The cabinet is raised panel sides and doors and all that burlaping sounds like a huge amount of effort. The question I have is can I apply BLO and wet sand it then after that dries, apply polyurethane over the BLO?
At what point should I stain….before the BLO/Wet s? After the BLO wet sand but before the poly?

To your first question, yes. Then stain after the BLO.Coat with poly then sand ,then coat again. To me, there are no shortcuts in finishing.
But none of this will change the ring-porous or open grain look of oak, so a grain filler should be used if this is the look you want.
I wet sand red oak w/ 50/50 BLO & thinner and a shot of Japan Drier. This helps it to dry faster and results less bleeding. If you are going to stain anyway and use an oil base stain then just wet sand the 2nd coat of stain w/ 320 to fill the pores and skip the BLO step.John O'Connell - JKO Handcrafted Woodworking

We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams, we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.
