question about byrd shelix planer head
howdy all!
Just wondering about my new to me planer with a byrd shelix. It scallops quite a lot. A whole lot more than my old straight knife planer. Is this to be expected? Does the carbide wear that way over time? This head was recently put in, and only one edge of the knives has been used. It doesn’t bog down (10hp) and sounds smooth, but maybe i should rotate them anyways? One thing i was thinking was some of them look different. Maybe he had some damage and replaced some teeth that are now longer? I’ve heard that they leave lines, but not that they scallop badly. Any experience with this? Bed rollers too high contribute to this? also what is the thing that causes excesive snipe? Too much or too little pressure on the feed rollers? Bed rollers too high? Its pretty bad, and goes away some if you really lift up on the boards as they exit the planer. In and out snipes bad. What do you think? One more thing. Where is the best place to get the carbide inserts from? Byrd only? Or would someone else make them as well? They have Byrd 4.0 stamped on them. Is this a size? Any help would be appreciated!

I've used a Northtech planer with an insert head and it cuts pretty nice. Sounds like you might have an issue. Stuff happens. You should send a sample of the cut to Byrd. If there is an issue Byrd will take care of it.
Those inserts are standard in the industry. http://www.woodtechtooling.com has a great tech staff and sells all kinds of inserts. Normally they deal with moulders and the pro-shops but will help out the hobbyist as well. They also sell the Byrd head I believe.
