Hello all, I have been thinking about investing in a pair of Magna-Set planer knife setting jigs for my 15″ thickness planer, and I was wondering if any of you are using this system to set planer knives, and what are your thoughts on how well it does or doesn’t work. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Works very well. The first time you have to do a simple setup to locate TDC of the knives, but after that it is quick. make sure you tighter each knife one bolt at a time in a symetric pattern. If you tighten one bolt all the way it tends to shift the knife. So tighten them the same way you would a car wheel.
Pardon my spelling,

Thanks for your reply. Are you talking about the jointer knife jig, or the planer knife jig ? The one I'm talking about is the planer jig that is shaped in a semi-. circle to straddle the cutterhead. Only reason I ask, is that it sounded like you were describing the jointer jig- but I could be wrong.

Your right, I read too quickly. I haven't use the planer jig but the guy who sharpens my knives uses one to reinstall them. I checked the setup after he left the first time and it was as good as could be. Now I don't check.
Pardon my spelling,

I use a home made jig and a dial indicator to set my knives but I am contemplating buying a set of these 'Magnetic Planer Knife Setting Jigs' from Woodcraft. Someone sells a similar jig on ebay.

I'm not impressed with the magna set stuff. I've done machine set up for a living and tried the magna set stuff when it first came out. The mag set is much better.
