Hi All, I own a set of Austrian chisels that have a protective coating on them. When I go to hone them, the coating gums up my stones. What is the best way to remove this coating, and should I remove it from the entire length of the chisel? It is not soluble in lacquer thinner.
thanks in advance Paul

Shish, I though laquer thinner would disolve anything. Have you tried acetone?
You might try just scraping it off with a razor blade.

Hi Paul,
The coating is, I believe, a rubber/plastic product. A razor blade will do the trick and yes, remove all of it. I had the same experience with replacement bades for my wooden planes.
Paul,
I had the same problem with (I think) some past wax on plane irons. I mixed a little dishwashing detergent with the water I use on my stones and have found that it keeps gunge off the stones - didnt wok instantly but seems good for maintenance.

That sounds like the same thing that you see on router bits and yes, you need to remove it. It's just a protective coating for protection during shipping. I use a utility knife most of the time.
Paul, if you use the chisels remove it. If they are only for show you may want to leave it on as rust protection. Steel wool and acetone ought to do it well. aloha, mike
