I was just reading the article on the FWW page regarding the use of UV rays to darken cherry before application of finishes and am interested in trying it on the cherry jewelry box I’m building right now.
After all, we have plenty of sunshine here in Texas and the price is right!
My question is this: The article mentioned that a coat of oil should be applied before the piece is set out in the sunshine for a day or so to darken. What kind of oil is the author talking about? Would that be boiled linseed oil, tung oil, or some other kind of oil?
If there is anyone here who has experience in this technique, any help and/or advise you could give me would be appreciated!

either of the oils you mentioned will work. some people argue that the linseed will darken it more, but i've used both and can't tell the difference.
*Thanks bullet. Guess I'll do a bit of experimenting with them both on some scrap and see what happens before I try either on my project. But it looks like with my new job (that I just started today) I'll not get nearly as much time in the shop as I'd like now. So it may be a while before my friend gets her jewelry box. :-(
