Is there a quick fix on worn through spots on an old oak floor? In this situation it’s not possible to do the right thing but I’d like to help out a customer. It might be possible to keep traffic off it for a few hours at a time. It’s not a classy place but anything would be better than nothing.
Thanks, Jerry

I'd use shellac for the quick fix. It will adhere to anything, including wax residue, so you don't have worries in that regard, which could be a problem for waterborne finishes. It dries very quickly, so you don't have to have the floor out of service for very long--a couple of hours will work just fine. And, it won't leave a lingering unpleasant odor. It won't complicate a more permanent refinishing when there is time to do it. It will also look good. The negatives: it isn't as abrasive resistant as some, and ammonia or other alkaline cleaning materials could damage it.
Thanks Steve. This forum must have taught me something. That was the direction I was leaning.
