Anyone have any experience with the quick-release steel vice sold by Lee Valley? How is it? I’m looking to replace my front vise that came with my Sjorberg bench because it is pretty flimsy.

I have no idea.. Get a pattern makers vice.. Sure to LOVE it!
EDIT:: I got mine from Woodcraft.. It is a little 'rough around the edges' but works great...
Takes a bit of work to fit it though!

Coincidently, I just happened to be looking for a bench vise and checked out the one you mentioned in a Lee Valley store. It's made in Czechoslovakia, is pretty heavy, is quite well machined without any noticeable slop in the guide rods, and toes in slightly at the top of the jaws. Compared to the other vises I've looked at including Shopfox and some Chinese models, it's a gem. I also considered the General International vise but at 7 inches is seemed a bit small.
I'll be getting the medium size model this weekend.
What style vise are you talking about? Steel jawed, like Record quick release style, or the screw and rod style that releases with a half turn backwards or whatever?
Lie-Neilsen offers a nice versionof the latter type.
If it's the former you're looking for, Highland hardware has Annant vises that use the old Record molds and are the same in pretty much every respect - casting, undercut threads, etc.
Lyptus,
Might as well look at Jorgenson while your at it...bit more expensive but has a wooden handle that's nice.
