I am curious what some of the people here who run professional shops would quote for the following product. It is a handle for a camera mount, I have a contract to do 125 of them. I would like to know what people would quote and what size shop they are, and other information. Thanks in advance.
They are made of walnut with a satin poly finish. They can be made completely on a shaper. They are 1″1/2 thick and have a 1/2 radius on the edges. The top has a 1″ diameter groove cut on the center lengthwise, with a mounting screw hole in front of the grip. Here is a picture of one that is just the rough outline of one.

Michael,
Here's a real rough stab at hours.
3 hrs Purchasing stock/planning
1 hr Make templates (multiples) for guiding router bit and laying out stock
1 hr Dress stock and cleanup
1.5 hrs Layout handles onto stock
5 hrs Rough cut profile with jigsaw and/or bandsaw
16 hrs Attach template to blank using hot melt glue, Cut profile on shaper, clean up on orbital spindle sander, remove template
12hrs Cut radius (shaper) and resand radius (hand)
5 hrs Cut frog in top of handle
2 hrs Drill csk hole
3 hrs Finish sand
12 hours Finishing/varnishing
2 hrs Delivery
This makes 64 hours shop time, say at USD40 per hour = USD 2500
Materials
8 x 2 walnut at approx USD15/m 6 of these per metre = 24m allowance
24m x USD15/m (pure guess on my part at your cost) = USD360-
Spindle moulder set up cost USD50-
Varnish USD80-
Total cost = USD500 + 20% = USD600
Overall cost = USD3100 = USD25- each
To make this cheaper, I'd just subcontract the cutting to a laser cutter - it's where the bulk of the hours are.
I used to be a one man shop, now I teach for a living so this is a sideline for me now.
Cheers,
eddie
