I am bidding on a #78 stanley rabbet plane on ebay. I can see how you can adjust the size of the rabbet by adjusting the fence. But I am not sure how to use the #190 (?) rabbet plane with no fence. How do you get it started and determine the size of the rabbet? Frank

By clamping a straight edge fence to the work for the plane to ride against, or by using a snipe bill plane (see Williams and Clark planes) to create a small groove for the plane to register to. This takes some hand/eye coordination.
